Every year on the third Friday in September the International Grenache Day is celebrated to commemorate the history of this grape variety used to make wines of extreme quality and taste, as well as its contributions to some of the world’s most delicious and distinguished wines.

Origin and history

The Grenache grape is believed to originate from Aragón, a region in northern Spain, where the climate and topography give it a characteristic berry-like sweetness and spiciness that make it incredibly interesting for any palate.
Grenache is a bright red fruit that brings a refreshing and appealing flavour to wines. Winemakers tend to favour it because of its low acidity and tannins, which make the wine taste less bitter. It is also quite common to blend Grenache with other grapes to create elegant, balanced, and fruity wines.

Types of Grenache

wine pairingAlthough the original variety of Grenache was cultivated in Aragon as early as the time of the Catholic Monarchs, from there it has spread and been cultivated in other regions of Spain and parts of the world such as the Italian island of Sardinia, the San Joaquin Valley in California, and Australia. This has led to the emergence of different varieties over the years:
Grenache Noir is the fifth most cultivated red grape variety in the world, with Spain as the leading producer. It produces very aromatic red, rosé or sweet wines, with a not very intense colour, high alcohol content, medium body and good acidity.
Grenache Blanc is a white mutation of Grenache noir grown in northeast Spain as well as France’s Rhône Valley. It produces aromatic and fruity white wines, full-bodied, with moderate acidity and a high alcohol content.
Garnacha Tintorera, is a grape of French origin and derives from a cross between Petit Bouschet and Garnacha. It produces colourful wines with dry extract and is generally not vinified on its own but used to add colour to blends. Thanks to their fruity and floral aroma and their medium-high alcohol content, they maintain their acidity.
There is also the so-called “Hairy Grenache“, which was evolved to protect itself from transpiration through the same mechanics of the fuzz under the leaf present in rosemary and other Mediterranean plants.
Or even the Grey Grenache, a little-known variety that is practically extinct, with which we have the pleasure of making one of our wines.

How to celebrate International Grenache Day

What better way to celebrate Grenache Day than with a glass of wine? At Crusoe Treasure Underwater Winery we make it easy for you with our wide selection of wines made from Grenache grape:

Sea Soul 7Sea Soul Nº7 is a white wine with Grenache Blanc from Batea, in the area of Terra Alta (Catalonia). It can have an exotic taste and evoke a trip to the Caribbean itself through the juiciest tropical fruits, which the sea has finished rounding off.

Sea Soul Nº8 is a white wine with Grenache Blanc from Batea, in the area of Terra Alta (Catalonia). It can have an exotic taste and evoke a trip to the Caribbean itself through the juiciest tropical fruits, which the sea has finished rounding off.

sp09 viñedoSea Passion Nº9 is one of the jewels in our current collection and in the words of our winemaker, Antonio T. Palacios is: “A wine that is close to perfection, this is one of the things that I highlight about it“. It is a red wine with Garnacha Tintorera and blended with Syrah from the Albacete area, aged for 16 months in French oak barrels and 15 months of underwater treasuring.

Sea Legend Nº10 is one of the most special and extreme underwater wines we have in our collection, since it is produced with a Grey Grenache from the Aragonese desert, a very little-known varietal and very difficult to find. Due to its orangey colour, not even the winemakers themselves agree on whether it is a red or a white wine.

Now you know all our wines made with this extraordinary and special grape. We encourage you to find the time to get together with your family and/or friends and enjoy them in good company.
Would you like to try them and share your impressions with us?
